Ball Python (Python regius)

Natural Habitat

  • Native to the grasslands and savannas of West and Central Africa.
  • Known for their docile nature and tendency to curl into a ball when threatened, hence the name "ball python."

Housing Requirements

  • Enclosure Size: A 40-gallon tank for adults; juveniles can be housed in smaller enclosures.
  • Substrate: Coconut coir, aspen bedding, or reptile carpet. Avoid cedar or pine, which are toxic.
  • Hiding Spots: Provide at least two hides - one on the warm side and one on the cool side.

Temperature & Humidity

  • Basking Spot: 88-92°F (31-33°C)
  • Ambient Temperature: 75-80°F (24-27°C)
  • Humidity: 50-60%; increase to 70% during shedding.
  • Tips: Use a thermostat to control heating elements and a hygrometer to monitor humidity.

Diet & Feeding

  • Diet: Rodents, such as mice or rats, appropriate to the snake's size.
  • Feeding Frequency:
    • Juveniles: Every 5-7 days
    • Adults: Every 10-14 days
  • Tips: Offer pre-killed prey to avoid injury to your snake.

Common Health Issues

  • Respiratory Infections: Caused by improper temperatures or humidity; symptoms include wheezing and open-mouth breathing.
  • Shedding Problems: Incomplete sheds are often due to low humidity.
  • Mites: Small parasites visible on the snake's body; treat with anti-mite products.
